Activity Objective: To learn more about the scientific method while having fun at our pool party!

Materials Needed:
  1. Small watermelon
  2. Baking soda
  3. Vinegar 
  4. Dish soap
  5. Food colouring (optional)
  6. Tray to catch the eruption

Procedures/Strategies:

a. Doesn’t watermelon just scream summer pool party food!?

b. Prep the watermelon by cutting a hole in the top like carving a pumpkin. Make the hole big enough to scoop out the fruit but small enough to facilitate your eruption. 

c. Fruit can be set aside to eat later! 

d. Put baking soda into the watermelon (approx. half a cup). 

e. Add a couple squirts of dish soap. 

f. Add pink/red food colouring if you would like this touch. 

g. Pour in vinegar and watch the eruption!

Make sure no ingredients get in children’s eyes. This is a messy experiment, protect clothes as needed.
