Activity Objective: To practice inquiry skills and learn about the properties of different materials.

Materials Needed:

1. Empty plastic bottles

2. Conversation hearts

3. Soda

4. Vinegar 

5. Water 

6. Rubbing alcohol

7. Other liquids you think might work

Procedures/Strategies:

a. Fill the different containers with the various liquids and label them. 

b. Leave one bottle empty, label it air and use it for reference against the other bottles.

c. Sit down as a group and have children predict what they think will happen to the candy hearts in the various liquids. 

d. Add 7 or 8 hearts to each liquid and observe what happens. Do each bottle one at a time.

e. Compare the results with the predictions and compare the effects to the reference “air” bottle. 

f. Let the bottles sit for a couple hours and see what they look like later.
